Dødheimsgard: Supervillain outcast

11/04/07  ||  Euthanatos

Dødheimsgard started out as just another black metal band from Norway. You know the drill, wearing tight pants, painting the face, strolling through the forest in search of blond virgins to sacrifice to the unholy goat.

Then, they went through some line-up changes, started calling themselves DHG and making what people call avant-garde black metal. Whatever the hell that means. The important thing is, that was probably the best thing they could have done for the band.

2007 delivers “Supervillain Outcast”, which may just be one of the top 5 metal albums of the year when all is said and done, and yes, I do realize it’s only March. This is how good this album is.

How to describe it is quite a pickle, though. I wouldn’t even call it black metal, to be totally honest. The avant-garde part we can keep, as we all know how much Lord K loves the French and everything related to them. Tee hee. But in all seriousness, the music performed here is very intrinsic, elaborate and thought-out. Layers and layers of haunting melodies, weird electronic effects (the good kind) and some fascinating vocal lines. Granted, some purists will probably turn away their heads because of Kvohst’s vocals, since Aldrahn, the former vocalist, was considered an integral part of DHG’s sound, but I actually enjoyed his deliverance here, no complaints at all. Versatile, sound, great diversity. Major props to him. By the way, I loved the “Secret Identity” intermission, with its gregorian-like chants and eventual metal mental breakdown that transforms into “The Vile Delinquents”.

But if we’re going to praise someone, truth be told, let it be Vicotnik, who managed to keep DHG going no matter what line-up was coming in (and out), and in the meantime managed to create one of the most amazing albums we’ll hear in a long time.

If you’re looking for something exquisitely different, metal with elements from modern black metal and electronic tidbits all trumped up with some of the best keyboards out there, this is the thing for you. Highly recommended.

The cover: Well, whaddya know, these guys even have a kick-ass weird-I-have-no-idea-what-it-is-but-I-love-it cover. Just the touch to make the product a perfect 10.

10 gnarly acronyms out of 10.
